Mrs. Jessie Mae Brown Williams, affectionately known as “twin” or “Ms. Jessie” was born in 1932 on Christmas Day. She was the oldest of identical twin girls by a few minutes. In 1951, Ms. Jessie graduated from Booker T. Washington High School where she received her formal education. After graduation, she enrolled in Spaulding Business School and graduated second in her class. In the late 1950s, she attended Wiley College in Marshall, TX. She continued her educational journey and attained academic credentials from Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, CA in 1967.
Ms. Jessie was married for 43 years to Hall Williams and was blessed with three children. At an early age, she became a member at West Chapel Baptist Church and passionately participated in the adult choir ministry. She enjoyed leading solos from time to time. She later united with New Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church and was a faithful member until she could no longer attend service because of various health challenges.
Ms. Jessie often enjoyed dressing in her Sunday best. She was lovingly known in her church community as "The lady who loved hats". She owned a hat for every outfit and occasion and her taste in hats was impeccable!
Ms. Jessie worked for the Caddo Parish School board for 19 years. She started her career as an Administrative Assistant at Ingersoll Elementary and retired as a teacher’s aide at J.S. Clark High School. In her early years, she volunteered during the summer and supervised recreational activities at Ingersoll Elementary School to help children in her community. The program received support from the Lakeside Recreation Project funded by the Caddo Parish School Board.
As a Christian, Ms. Jessie joyfully embraced every opportunity to serve and show kindness to others. She participated in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (R.S.V.P.) for the Caddo Council on Aging for ten years. She called homebound seniors, performed clerical duties, and marched with other seniors in downtown Shreveport, Louisiana to support funding for Meals on Wheels. Also, she sewed and modeled her clothing for various fashion shows throughout several nursing homes in the Shreveport area. It is no secret, she loved volunteering at the center and dedicated her service to helping seniors. In her leisure, she enjoyed listening to gospel music, reading her Bible, and going to church.
Later in life after her husband died, Ms. Jessie developed early-stage Dementia. For some time, she lived with her daughter, Karen, and son-in-law, Stanley. Being caregivers for her mother, Karen and Stanley learned first-hand the joys and challenges of taking care of a loved one. Ms. Jessie passed away in 2014 due to complications of Dementia/Alzheimer's disease at the age of 81. Her faith and courage were an inspiration to all who knew her.
Karen was inspired to continue her mother's legacy by starting a non-profit to help other seniors in her local community. In 2021, Karen established the JMAE Group, along with a group of volunteers to support seniors over the age of 65.
These volunteers wholeheartedly give their time to ensure that a positive difference is being made in the lives of our seniors to preserve their independence and maintain their dignity.
